I am replacing my flange on my toilet, but I'm new to it. I was expecting a wax ring, but instead found more of a black rubbery round gasket. I did not find one at home depot to replace it. I spoke with a worker at home depot and he got me a 4 inch flange that you must screw into the wood flooring and then put the wax ring on top of it. Is this normal? Is this toilet different than typical toilets? What should be some of my concerns?

Hmmmm... depending on the age of the house, he might be correct. Here is the current method:

you will need:

1. Flange--usually PVC but there are also metal ones. It will have 2 slots for the mounting bolts that hold the toilet in place and the drain. The mounting should look like this ( O ) when you look at it. If you have a pipe on the floor only (flange is missing) get the cast iron one that has a rubber gasket that will seal to the pipe and screw it to the floor. Be SURE that it seals.

2. Wax Ring +--Get the JUMBO wax ring with mounting bolts (always replace these) and you will also notice that it has a small black flange attached to the ring. this goes into the pipe. the bolts should fit here -->( O )<--

When installing the toilet, it is easier to remove the tank but not necessary (makes the next part go more smoothly). lower the bowl into place being careful not to twist it or lean it heavily to one side. Carefully tighten the bolts and use them to finish pulling the bowl down into place. You might also need toilet shims to level it.

DO NOT caulk the toilet to the floor. if there is a leak in the wax seal, you have to wait until it seeps under the floor and comes out somewhere else to see it; without caulk, water will come out at the toilet making it easier to spot and causing less damage in the process. What color paint would look best ?

Living room furniture is a mushroom(light brown/cream) color and trim is brown. Any ideas of what color to paint the walls? It also has a red brick fireplace with dark wood colored mantle.

Something in the orange family might look awesome. Behr.com has a great color selection tool (from the home page, click on Explore Color). Check out some of these colors:

Coral Gold

Or, another approach is to find a color with this tool that closely resembles the brick in your fireplace, and then ask the tool to return coordinating colors.

How to model a bathroom that has a GREEN bathtub and toilet seat?

I'll soon be moving in with my soon-to-be husband in a little apartment that has one washroom. The problem? The bathtub and the entire toilet is GREEN. Not a nice dark green, but a vibrant ocean green. The flooring is white, black, and beige tiny specks. How can I make this work? What shower curtains could be used? That color of soap dishes? You could go with a nice striped curtain/rug/towels in the green, black, tan, or cream or any combination of colors to make the room look a little more formal/classic, add a nice framed picture and a sleek soap dish and fancy candles all
in the same metal tone as your fixtures.

Go with an ocean theme with a translucent (think water) curtain and some fun towels and accessories, add a couple
real seashells in a dish, a fish shaped glass jar with colored bath salts.

Think melon or sherbert ice cream and just choose some
accessories in honeydew, canteloupe, watermelon, lime, orange, or pineapple colors.
