Need to know the name of this fish-like animal that came home with a painted turtle?
My son found a painted turtle on the 4th of July. He brought it home and made a home for it in the aquarium. Since then we have discovered a new friend in the aquarium. It looks like it could be a type of slug, very thin (almost see through) small, tannish in color, and was originally found stuck to the turtle's shell. I at first thought that it was leech of some kind and scraped it off the shell, in fear of it making it's way to the turtle's skin, and flushed it in the toilet. The next day there was another one, a little smaller, stuck to the glass of the aquarium! My son has said that there is now another very tiny one in the aquarium stuck to one of the clear plastic rocks we have laid at the bottom of the aquarium! I was wondering if it could be a type of algae eater or something that could be harmful to the turtle?
They are definitely leeches. I find them on sliders all the time in the wild. The babies are kind of translucent and the adults are brown. Adults of the species I commonly find on turtles can be around 2-3 inches long. Check the turtle's crevices around its neck and tail. The leeches will hide up around the underside of the shell stuck around the loose skin on the turtle's body. Occasionally they will be stuck to the shell but usually they are in the crevices. See if you can remove them with tweezers. You can treat the tank with diluted bleach (rinsed thoroughly) to remove any tiny leeches.
